Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: None as Issued. 1st Penguin Ed, 1st Printing. Text/As New showing faint margin discoloration. Illustrated softcover (detail from Jerusalem by D. Henry)/NF w/trace shelfwear. Anthology of poems, selected by poet Yehuda Amichai (1924 - 2000) himself. Originally written in He…brew. This English edition is in 173 pgs, 2 parts. Part I, poems written 1955 - 1968, translated by Stephen Mitchell; Part II, written 1971- 1985, translated by Chana Bloch. Born in Germany, Yehuda Amichai moved to Palestine when twelve. In 'Jews in the Land of Israel' written about 1971, he writes: "We forget where we came from. Our Jewish/names from the Exile give us away/. Circumcision does it to us/As in the Bible story of Shechem & the sons of Jacob/so we go on hurting all our lives/.What are we doing coming back to all this pain?/.What are we doing/in this dark land with its/yellow shadows that pierce the eyes?/.What are we doing w/these souls of mist, w/these names/with our eyes of forests, w/our beautiful children/with our quick blood?/Spilled blood is not the roots of trees/but it is the closest thing to roots/we have." A song from the soul. Yehuda Amichai is Israel's leading poet, and one of the most outstanding voices of our time. Fine copy.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First Vintage Books Edition, January 1984. Introduction by Robert Hass. Bilingual edition. 356pp. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in FINE condition (very slight shelfwear). "Stephen Mitchell's translations bring the qualities that I most cherish in the originals into English with new… intimacy and authority. Rilke's voice, with its extraordinary combination of formality, power, speed and lightness, can be heard in Mr. Mitchell's versions more clearly than in any others. His work is masterful."--W. S. Merwin. "His translation of the Duino Elegies--Rilke's masterpiece--is the best that has been made . . . intensely readable--yet he has not simplified the ideas."--Stephen Spender, New York Review of Books. "Perhaps the most beautiful group of poetic translations this century has produced."--The Chicago Tribune. "The best single-volume edition of Rilke available in English."--The Boston Review. Near-pristine FINE paperback w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine. Quite presentable.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. The uncorrected proof for Stephen Mitchell's translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's famous "Letters to a Young Poet." Rilke (1875-1926) wrote the letters to an aspiring poet, Franz Xaver Kappus, between 1903 and 1908. Kappus had written to Rilke, seeking Rilke's approval of his poems. Rilke doesn't… comment much on the quality of Kappus's verses, but he's generous with advice on art, solitude, and the writing life. Kappus published the 10 letters from Rilke in 1929, three years following Rilke's death. While there have been numerous translations since then, this version by Stephen Mitchell was widely praised by critics. PHYSICAL DETAILS: Octavo (8.25 x 5.25 inches; 208 x 135 mm), 89, [1] pages, in printed wrappers (soft cover). CONDITION: Staining and foxing to front and rear covers near the spine but internally bright and unmarked. Very Good.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. In English and Spanish. This is another book that was owned by the author Erica Jong. She signed her name on the blank front end paper. She also underlined (in pen) a sentence, or a few sentences, on a half-dozen pages, also penned 'p.27 ' on the blank rear end p…aper. Page 27 was one of the pages she underlined on. The book is in really nice condition. The covers are exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners look terrific, no rubbing. The page edges look very good, the middle one is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is very solidly bound with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I didn't find any soiling. There doesn't seem to be any creasing. There are no markings or attachments. And Ms. Jong's signature is the only name written in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in very nice shape. It's very clean. I don't see any soiling at all. There's a tiny crinkle just off the top edge of the spine. The flaps are in very nice shape, perfectly clean. There is a teeny tiny tear off the rear flap's top edge just adjacent to its middle edge shared with the rear cover. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned.
