Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a comprehensive enumeration of the mosses of East India that were known to science in the mid-19th century. It positions the regions of East India within the broader study of bryophytes, with the author undertaking an examination of mosses from the Himalayas, the Nilghri Mountains, the Khasia Mountains, and Ceylon. It considers the structure of 150 species and advances significant revisions to systems of classification previously employed, with several new species described and illustrated. The author does not avoid species new to science, though the work primarily sets out to enumerate what was already known. The insights found within are significant both to the study of the bryophytes of East India and to the development of global taxonomic systems. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

1st Edition. [4], 659, [1 (blank)] pp. 9" x 5-3/4" This volume from the Linnean Society is all about mosses in South America. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area, owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector, so we suspect this was in his library at one time, with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche (1870-1945). Knoche was born in San Jose, California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation. Water damage to boards and leaves, this caused soiling, discoloration and wear to boards, edges and corners of boards are a bit frayed, gilt a bit dull, leaves a slightly crinkled due to water damage, water damage to fore-edge of leaves, ink inscription to first paste-down (previous owner?), embossed library stamp to second title page. A usable Good copy. Publishers green cloth, decorative blind stamp to upper and lower boards, brown(?) /sunned(?) back strip, gilt lettering to back strip, soft yellow end papers, black ink stain to all edges, text primarily in Latin (introduction in English).

While at University he became interested in botany, and earned a gold medal for the best local collection of plants, and assisted in arranging the Indian herbarium. In 1854 he entered the Bengal medical service, and went to Calcutta. Subsequently he went to Delhi, where he was actively engaged during the mutiny, returning to Calcutta in 1858. His health failing, he came home, and, the steamer being detained at Aden for some days, he made an interesting collection of the plants of that region, upon which he based his 'Florula Adenensis,' published in 1860."
