8vo. 2 vols. (16), 891, (19) pp. (4), 784, (18) pp. Titles printed in red and black. With engraved frontispiece and 3 folding tables in vol. 1. Late 19th c. half cloth over marbled boards with handwritten title to spines. Eighth edition, an unchanged reprint of the 1753 seventh edition. A famous handbook for merchants, the most…widely used work of its kind in 18th century Holland. Includes detailed information on all subjects of interest to merchants: the Amsterdam stock exchange, bill-broking, pawnbroking, the corn trade, sales by auction, drapery, weights, measures and coins, excises, insurance, the East and West India Company, the trade with Moscow, the Scandinavian countries, German towns, Switzerland, Flanders, England, France, Spain, the Spanish West Indies, Portugal, Italy, etc. The first edition of this work, a slim volume of a mere 89 pages, was published in 1694 by Jacques le Moine de l'Espine, a French protestant refugee who established in Amsterdam around 1679 as a merchant and print dealer. A great number of ever-expanding editions followed, edited by Isaac le Long after the death of the original author and from 1727 onwards augmented by a second volume. The final edition, which ran to four volumes, appeared in 1801/02. - Title of second volume stained, corner of title and table of contents repaired not affecting text. - Jansen p. 226.

2 parts in 1 volume. Rare second and greatly expanded French edition of an important treatise on the trade and commerce of the city of Amsterdam by the art dealer Jacques Le Moine de l'Espine (d. 1696), first published in both Dutch and French in 1694. It gives detailed information on the Amsterdam banking and exchange systems a…nd on the structure and trade of the VOC and WIC (Dutch East and West India Companies), and gives accounts of the whaling industry, trade in Russia, Scandinavia, the whole of Europe, and the Levant. It compares the volume and value of goods going in and out of Amsterdam with those of other cities. It also reports standard weights, measures and monies as well as exchange rates. The second Dutch edition appeared in 1704 with some additions, but the present French edition has further additions, including for the first time the entire second part (pp. 243-388) on arbitrage (the trade in bills of exchange and stocks) and exchange rates between the principal cities of Europe and Amsterdam, by the French-Basque architect and merchant Jacques Mondoteguy (ca. 1672/73-1739). The book gives valuable and detailed information about the trade with the Spanish, Portuguese and other colonies in a period when the Netherlands financed and operated a fleet of over 8000 ships. With water stains in the first few and last few leaves (the latter with a few marginal restorations) and a couple worm holes in the gutter margin, but still in good condition. The binding is slightly rubbed and somewhat loose in the hinges but still good. A rare and important practical handbook for merchants trading in or with Amsterdam.l Goldsmiths 4601; J. Hoock & P. Jeannin, Ars mercatoria II (1991), L26.6 (3 copies); NCC (2 copies); cf. Kress 1849 (1694 Dutch ed.); this ed. not in STCN. 18th-century half vellum, sewn on 3 vellum tapes, marbled endpapers (Dutch pattern in red, blue, yellow and white, swirled), manuscript title at head of spine, edges sprinkled red & blue. With 2 title pages (the general one in red and black), each with Brunel's woodcut PB cypher monogram, 2 woodcut decorated initials and decorations built up from typographic ornaments. Pages: [4], 388, [2] pp.

Second edition, bound as issued with Jacques Mondoteguy's Traité des Arbitrages, also published by Pierre Brunel in 1710, but in Paris. Le negoce d'Amsterdam was first published in both Dutch and French in 1694. Jacques le Moine de l'Espine (d. 1696) was a merchant, dealer in art and maps, mathematician, and writer on economics…who was based in Amsterdam from 1697 onwards. Goldsmiths' 4601. Quarto (221 x 165 mm). Title printed in red and black, separate divisional title leaf for Traité des Arbitrages, continuously paginated with that gathering (Hh) having five leaves. Woodcut title page vignettes to both, head- and tailpieces, initials, numerous tables to text. Contemporary calf, rebacked preserving the original spine, title lettered in gilt to second compartment, rest elaborately tooled in gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled red and blue. Early ownership signature "Jouxtel" hand written in ink to front pastedown, "Jouxtely" to title page and final page, "Jou:tel" to fore edge of book block, likely the same hand which has carefully amended the catchword on the final page of Le Moine de L'Espine's work to match the first word of Mondoteguy's title page and neatly corrected a figure on p. 235; engraved bookplate of Jean R. Perrette to front pastedown. Corners restored, a few marks to boards, lower corner of book block up to p. 170 a little gnawed, front free endpaper laid onto following blank, occasional marginal dampstain but generally contents crisp, a few pen trials to title page and last few blanks, natural paper flaw along lower margin of leaf Ff1 resulting in small loss to lower corner (not affecting text). Overall a very good copy.
