Its primary focus is on the debates surrounding the subject throughout history, particularly during the period of Iconoclasm. The author presents a comprehensive analysis of the arguments for and against the use of sacred images, delving into the theological, cultural, and historical context of the controversy. The book also examines the role of images in devotion, education, and the development of Christian art. Through a thorough examination of patristic texts and historical documents, the author provides insights into the significance of images in shaping religious beliefs and practices. Overall, this book offers a valuable contribution to our understanding of the complex and multifaceted subject of religious imagery in Christianity, making it an essential resource for scholars and those interested in the history of religion and art. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Ex libris inscription in old hand to blank rear endpage. Johannes Molanus (1533-1585), Counter-Reformation theologian and 'arguably the most important writer for the pro-image party after the Council of Trent' (Freedberg, 1976, 'The Representation of Martyrdoms During The Early Counter-Reformation in Antwerp', Burlington Magazine 118, 137). Molanus first published this reissue of the Usuardi Martyrologium in 1568, 'complete with his notes and a long critical Praefatio' (Marino 2018, 'Approaching the Martyrologium Romanum: A semiotic perspective', Lexia: Rivista di semiotica 31-32, p. 185). Usuard's Martyrologium, compiled by the Parisian Benedictine Usuard and written shortly before the author's death in 875, was the most influential martyrology of the Middle Ages. Molanus' second 1573 edition of Usuard, which further revised his additions and commentary, was published a decade before the official Martyrologium Romanum, whose authors held the honest and conscientious, 'probe et consciencieuse' work of Molanus in high esteem, often following his work unquestioningly, 'suivirent Molanus sans le contrà ler' ( Baudouin, 1956, '"Sub Iuliano Apostata" dans le martyrologe romain', Analecta bollandiana 74, 1-2, 8, 10). Molanus' work thus stands as an important bridge between medieval martyrologies and the Martyrologium Romanum. The Indiculus Sanctorum Belgii, 'a small work on the Belgian saints' (Freedberg, 137) was also the work of Molanus, first published (this edition) in 1573, then again in 1583. Molanus' executors published his more substantial posthumous work on the subject, Natales Sanctorum Belgii, in 1595. Robust packaging. Tracking is always added to USA orders. It can be added to other overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. Size: (33), 255, 105 leaves. Sm 8vo (18 x 12 x 5 cm).
