Add to basketContemporary boards, old paper spine-label, 8vo, vi, 195, [2] pp, folding genealogical table of the Aldus family. The fourth and best edition of this early and attractively-printed bibliography of the Aldine Press. Burgassi first provides an 84 -page history of the press, which is then followed by a catalogue of Aldine publications from 1494-1595 presented in chronological order with an author index. The catalogue listings include formats as well as pagination or leaf counts. Although describing itself as the third edition, the book is in fact the fourth: the previous editions having been published in Pisa (1790), Padua (1790?) and Venice (1791). The first edition had been based on the Aldine collection of Cardinal Lomenie de Brienne (a collection later acquired by Renouard), with later editions having been supplemented (to the extent of some 500 additional entries) from various sources. Burgassi's work is a considerable advance on earlier listings by Manni and Unger, but the year of publication of this fourth edition also saw the first appearance of Renouard's bibliography. Small booklabels of Biblioteca D. Francesco Agosti in the lower margin of the title-page and of Tammaro de Marinis on the verso of the front free endpaper, binding worn at joints and edges, lower fore-edge corner of front free endpaper torn away, text in good clean condition.
