Aurelio Scetti, sentenced to be beheaded for murdering his wife, is pardoned at the eleventh hour. Instead he is forced to help power a slave galley fighting the Barbary pirates and others, Scetti describes his eleven years of captivity, at which point we lose the thread of his story.
