Ces Noëls, écrits en patois bourguignon, sont l'oeuvre du Dijonnais Bernard de La Monnoye (1641-1728), érudit et poète académicien français, sous le pseudonyme de Gui Barôzai. Leur style malicieux et spirituel leur attira les foudres de l'Eglise, qui tenta sans succès de les faire censurer par la Sorbonne. Les Noëls eurent néanmoins un succès prodigieux et ils furent fredonnés jusqu'à la Cour. Ils demeurent l'une des meilleures oeuvres rédigées en dialecte bourguignon.
