The first French edition was published the same year in Paris in two volumes plus atlas. This is the first English edition and a translation of the portion of the work which relates to North America. It is of great interest, and describes the author's journey up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers by steamboat, "it has interesting sidelights of the fauna and flora of the areas he visited, descriptions of the islands of the West Indies and of the trade and commerce there, and the life of the settlers in those areas into which he ventured.
