Published on the occasion of the painting exhibition 'Frank Moore', March 25 to April 22, 1995 at Sperone Westwater Gallery in New York City. Frank Moore [1953-2002] grew up on Long Island and spent his childhood summers in the Adirondacks with his family, instilling a strong interest in the natural world from an early age. He received a BFA in art and psychology from Yale University. After spending a year in Paris at the Cité des Arts, he returned to Manhattan where he collaborated on theater, dance and film productions, in addition to continuing his art practice. After his diagnosis with HIV in 1987, his work increasingly grappled with issues around AIDS, environmental degradation, bioethics, homosexuality and health care. He enjoyed a series of solo exhibitions, beginning in 1983 at the Clocktower in Tribeca. Additionally, Moore's work is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the New York Public Library; the Yale University Art Gallery; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

This book tells the remarkable lives of the pioneers of science - from Galileo and Newton, Faraday and Darwin, Pasteur and Marie Curie, to Einstein, Freud, Turing, and Crick and Watson. A series of seventy articles, written by an international team of distinguished scientists, historians of science and science writers, provides an unrivalled account of the lives and personalities behind the greatest scientific breakthroughs of all time. Organized thematically, starting at the 'Universe', and moving smaller through the 'Earth' and 'Molecules and Matter' to 'Inside the Atom', with the final two sections looking at 'Life' and 'Body and Mind', it covers all the major scientific disciplines, including astronomy, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computing, ecology, geology, medicine, neurology, physics and psychology, as well as mathematics. The Scientists will intrigue budding scientists, those fascinated by the lives of great individuals, and anyone curious to know how over the centuries we came to understand the physical world around us and inside us.
