Hardcover. Condition: Good. This is only the First Volume of Thomas Moore's famous "Memoirs of Sheridan", the great Irish playwright and poet. Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751- 1816), was also a Whig member of the English House of Commons. But today he is mostly remembered for his remarkable satiric plays, "The Rivals", "The School for Scandal" , "The Critic" and others - all of which have entered into the pantheon of English Drama. PROVENANCE : Deaccessioned from defunct Church Sodality Library, St. James Church, Cazenovia New York with Library Bookplate dated 1877. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Trade Hardcover; Volume I only; contains an engraved portrait of Sheridan as frontispiece, with tissue guard; 307 pages (taking the memoirs through 1787); approximately 4 3/4" x 7 1/4" (12mo); blind-stamped slate-green cloth with title, etc. lettered in gilt on spine; chocolate-colored end-papers CONDITION -- GOOD -- Deaccessioned library volume (a long-defunct library) EXTERIOR - Modest wear including a bit of mild surface rub and some spotting to spine (possibly where there was once a catalog label) - there is a slight bubbling (or lifting) of cloth on the front board - the text block edges are toned but clean. BINDING - Solid - it is obvious that the book was read, but no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR - The paper is unavoidably toned and must be considered fragile. There is an old Sodality Library bookplate (dated 1877) affixed to front paste-down (this has the lending rules of the Library) - mild surface rub to end-papers - a tiny bit of paper is affixed at the center of the front hinge (a notice removed?) the frontispiece has imprinted on the title page - the leaves of the first 34 pages are bumped and creased at the bottom, forming nesting dog-ears (I have left this as it is - see picture); a few scattered spots and small smudges , else clean and presentable.
