This book is an epic poem that narrates the events of a sumptuous wedding held in the Tempio degli Amanti, or the Temple of Lovers, a magnificent fictional structure representing the grandeur of the Medici court in Florence, Italy. The author takes creative license to invent a grand spectacle where mythical figures such as Venus and Cupid, allegorical personifications of virtues such as Magnanimity, and historical figures from antiquity such as Alexander the Great, interact with the guests, who are a colorful cast of noblemen and ladies, artists, and poets, all celebrating the marriage of two illustrious lovers. The main subject of the book is, therefore, the wedding and the festivities surrounding it, meant to represent the height of culture and sophistication of the Medici court. Copertina rigida. Condition: discrete. Cm.12,3x6,3. Pg.(24), 638. Legatura in mz.pergamena con titoli manoscritti al dorso. Piatti marmorizzati e tagli spruzzati. Marca calcografica al frontespizio, in cornicetta a doppio filo. Capilettera ornati. Edizione sconosciuta anche all'Albertazzi". Graesse, IV, 601, segnala l'edizione 1651. 200 gr.

Popular historical novel about a musically gifted nun set in civil war England and in the Mediterranean, which is considered a prototype of romance. First published at Piacenza in 1650, the book was a bestseller, reprinted well into the 18th century. Its plot is thought to be partly autobiographical and influenced by the counter reformation. It includes dialogues defining the concepts of the Genovese mercantile class. La Rosalinda is the bestknown work by the author (1589-1656) who also wrote libretti for musical dramas (1646 & 1652). An English translation of Rosalinda, a novel containing the histories of Rosalinda and Lealdus was published in 1733; an adaptation by John Lockman appeared in 1740 as Rosalinda, a musical drama. A French abridged translation by Gaspard M. Fontanieu was published at Grenoble 1730 and Paris 1732. Blank corners of last leaf repaired without loss.
