Softcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition (softcover issue). [light wear to extremities, slight bending to corners of front cover, some scarring to rear cover from old label removal]. Trade PB (B&W photographs) Fante was still a wannabe writer living in Colorado in 1930 when he first wrote to Mencken, expressing a wish to con…tribute to the latter's esteemed journal The American Mercury. "What followed was a correspondence lasting more than twenty years [sic], during which time Mencken did publish several of Fante's short stories [including his first, "Altar Boy," in the August 1932 issue], but perhaps even more importantly encouraged and guided him along his chosen literary path and often provided sympathetic counsel to the younger man's growing pains, self doubts and aspirations." (The reason I stuck that "[sic]" in there is because that statement, and indeed the book's title, is a little misleading: the last actual exchange of letters between the two was in 1940. There was no contact at all throughout the 1940s, although Fante did write three more letters to Mencken in 1951 and 1952, at which time Mencken (having suffered a stroke in 1948) was unable to answer. (Two of these were answered by his secretary.)).
