Silver medallion screw box, featuring a portrait of Frederick the Great in relief on the upper part, containing 39 round engraved plates and text, accordion-style, on the Silesian campaigns of the Prussian king from his accession, 1740-1763; the plates include views, two maps, a portrait, and the text. Fredrick succeeded to the throne in May, 1740, and by October was at war over Silesia, the beginning of the War of Austrian Succession (1740-1742), following which Austria ceded much of Silesia to Frederick. The Second Silesian War followed quickly (1744-1745), solidifying Frederick's earlier gains and setting up the conflict later termed the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), involving the armies of much of Western Europe, ending in yet another victory for Frederick, further enhancing his military reputation and strengthening his hold on his expanding territory. "Prussia emerged from the war as a great power whose importance could no longer be challenged. Frederick the Great's personal reputation was enormously enhanced . [and] the memory of his energy and military genius was strenuously kept alive" (Wikipedia). OCLC locates one copy (Brown). Some of the panels are detached, but a very good example in a fine box. The silver screw box is dated on the bottom part "MDCCLVIIII". Obverse: embossed bust portrait of Frederick the Great, with the legend 'Fredericus Magnus Rex Borussorum'; reverse: an allegorical group showing Fame seated on Time with the legend 'Veritatis Paradoxa,"the date 'MDCCLVIIII" and the author's name just below. (9812).
