Squarish quarto, hardcover with 168 pages and 80 pictures (color and black and white) , in gray pictorial boards. 9" x 9" (23x23cm) landscape format Limited edition of 350 copies A photo book with extraordinary b & w and color photos of remote islands of Japan, written in both English and Japanese. Japan has 6, 852 islands of which 416 are inhabited and most uninhabited. Most of the 120 million people of Japanlive on 5 main islands called "hondo" while the rest live on remote islands called "rito"; here the raw beauty of these islands is captured. As. --- Japan is officially made of 6,852 islands: 416 manned islands and 6,436 unpopulated islands. Most of Japan's 120 million population is concentrated in the five main islands of Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and main island of Okinawa). This photography book shows the essence of everyday life in some of the 411 remote islands excluding the five main islands through their landscapes, environments, and portraits of people who inhabit in these remote islands. Insular cultures are different from continental cultures. While insular cultures are more isolated and protected geographically and naturally, continental cultures are more mixed and mingled with other cultures. It is said that islanders tend to have more cooperativeness and prefer harmony than conflicts because they are not used to make an effort to protect their own cultures, values and ideas. On the other hand, continental people tend to be assertive and not to be afraid of conflicts because they are used to make a lot of efforts to protect their own cultures, values and ideas. Thomas Moore published "Utopia" about 500 years ago. His utopia was an island. It was a crescent-shaped island created artificially by separating a part of the peninsula from the continent. He believed utopia had to be an island that is separated and far from human conflicts. We dedicated 6 years (2014-2019) to photograph these remote islands, visiting more than 60 small islands lost in the middle of the ocean. The journey was challenging but amazing at the same time. What we felt through this project was that the islanders on the remote islands of Japan were less talkative and more shameful and generous than the people in the mainland of Japan. It was like seeing the Japanese people whom we used to know decades ago. On top, in the remote islands we found unsophisticated raw beauty that has vanished in mainland of Japan. In remote islands, we could see Japan as island, and Japanese as islanders. ???????6,852??????????????????????416??????6,436?????????????????????2000??????????????????????????????? ????????????? ???????????416?????5???????411??????????????????????????????????????????????????????
