Robert E. Moritz is a distinguished American mathematician and educator, renowned for his contributions to mathematics and his leadership in academic institutions. Born on June 2, 1868, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Moritz emigrated to the United States at the age of twelve, settling in Nebraska. He pursued higher education at Hastings College and the University of Chicago, earning his MA in mathematics in 1896. Moritz began his academic career as an assistant professor at Hastings College in 1893, later obtaining a PhD from the University of Nebraska in 1901. He furthered his studies in Europe under Heinrich Martin Weber and Theodor Reye, earning a second PhD from the University of Strasbourg in 1902. Returning to the U. S. , he held positions at the University of Nebraska before joining the University of Washington in 1905 as a professor and head of the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy. Moritz authored approximately 75 books and papers, significantly impacting the field of mathematics. He passed away on December 28, 1940, in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 72.
