[Das witzige und detailreiche Blatt mittig mit zwei horizontalen, geglätteten Bugfalten.] "The Snipe Festival (Oculi, there they come .)" original lithograph on paper (34x50cm) by Moritz Veith; signed and dated "1840" in the stone and with the blind stamp of the L.F.Fues`sche Buch- und Kunsthandlung in Tübingen [The witty and detailed sheet in the center with two horizontal, smoothed crease folds.] Oculi, so heißt der 3. Fastensonntag auf Latein. Er soll der Stichtag sein, an dem die ersten Schnepfen wieder bei uns zu beobachten sind. So sagt zumindest ein alter Merkvers. Der Spruch gibt den Jägern anhand der Fastensonntage Auskunft über das Vorkommen der Schnepfe zur jeweiligen Zeit. Er lautet wie folgt: Reminiscere putz die Gewehre; Oculi da kommen sie; Laetare das ist das Wahre; Judica sind sie auch noch da; Palmarum, trallarum, Quasimodogeniti Halt Jäger halt, jetzt brüten sie!

Sohn des Johann Philipp Veith. Erster Unterricht beim Vater. 1834-37 Studium an der Kunstakademie in Dresden. Von ihm sind Jagdbilder und Porträtbilder bekannt. Im Stein links unten signiert: Nach der Nat. auf Stein gez. von Prof. M. Veith. In der Darstellung am rechten Rand ligiertes Monogramm und Jahr.
