Condition: Sehr gut. Kein Schutzumschlag. 125 S. unbenutzt, 200 g schwer P-4.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This well written and thoroughly researched biographical account of the life and times of a South African WW2 pilot (the author's father) is sure to appeal widely. The story is by necessity highly personal, drawing on family history and changing lifestyles as the central figure fights his wa…y through a series of challenging experiences, flying coastal strike missions in the Mediterranean and North Africa, then in the Far East against the Japanese. The story is full of personal perspectives and gets off to a thorough and engrossing operational start, before re-tracing the personal family story to place everything in context. Images of a lost world haunt the pages, evocative of an era where a decisive individual could challenge the system and get results, despite massive inflexibility within the Services. This work is sure to make a welcome addition to any discerning readers collection; the story of Coastal Command is often over-looked, with histories focussing largely on the Fighter boys and Bomber Boys of World War Two and their associated experiences. The exploits recorded in this book therefore serve as an over-due reminder of the Unit, and the part they played in the Allied effort. Ted's wartime exploits include the first mid-air sky-jacking in history, a daring solitary attack on the Italian fleet after losing the rest of his strike team, narrowly surviving being burnt in the subsequent inferno of a horrific air crash in the Ceylon jungle, many emergency crash landings and finally - as Commander of 27 Squadron - carrying out dangerous rescue operations behind enemy lines for members of the Indian Resistance Movement who were operating in the jungle of Burma. Written largely in the first person, and illustrated extensively, these exploits come vividly to life. AUTHOR: Gail Strever - Morkel was born in 1951 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. She was educated at St. Peter's Diocesan School, the Bulawayo Technical College of Art, where she obtained a first class BA Fine Arts degree. Her body of work 'In Absentia' dealt with issues of colonialism and feminism, based on her research of southern African history, particularly the history of Bulawayo where she grew up. This book, her first, marks a determination on her part to record her father's stories as he told them. She spent a series of years recording their conversations. This book is the result of that discussion. She lives in Uniondale with her husband Mike Morkel, and has two children and a grandchild. Ted Strever's story charts an adventurous coming-of-age tale experienced with the RAF. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. Rhodesia--beginning to end is a historical trek seen through the eyes of the white pioneers who tamed the wilderness of what is now Zimbabwe and whose descendants struggled for life amidst African rebellion. A fascinating, fact-filled read, this book transports its audience to a different place and tim…e that sets the stage for understanding the uniqueness of central Africa. Read more Continue reading Read less ABOUT THE AUTHORRON MORKEL was born and raised among the white agricultural community of Rhodesia. He descends from pioneers whose industry and hard work brought western-style civilization to the lands sparsely populated by Matebele and Shona tribes people. He spent his youth surrounded by seemingly endless, empty vleis and rocky hills teeming with wildlife that his forebears taught him to respect and care for. He felt a happy and mutually beneficial symbiosis with the local natives, some of whom became like family. The locals derived employment from the mines and ranches of the white Africans. All the while, rumbles of rebellion were brewing among the native population as firebrand politicians like Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe preached overthrow of the white-run government. Their tactics of terror sparked civil war, whipped by outside influences with their own motivations. When Prime Minister Ian Smith declared independence from Great Britain, the world turned against Rhodesia, and the white population felt abandoned to defend their homes and way of life alone. The unrest began as an inconvenience to the author, but it overtook and forever changed his life and the country he loved. He now lives peacefully in the mountains of North Carolina, and his children have settled in the Pacific Northwest. The corruption, violence, suffering, and precipitous decline of conditions in Zimbabwe continue to torment him. Read more Continue reading Read less.
