There is one pink stamp each on the title page and Page 206 that reads, "Library, State Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, and the Blind, Berkeley, Cal." The stamps do not affect text except for the "T" in "The End." on Page 206. Tipped-in pocket label on the back pastedown lists the terms of checking out books from the library and instructs patrons to place their cards in the pocket when the book in on loan. A card is included in this pocket. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Some dust on the top edge of the text block not affecting pages internally. No external markings, except for a moderate amount of rubbing to the covers. Covers somewhat faded. Small chip on fore-edge of front free endpaper. A Near Fine copy. This book is part of a thirty-six-volume biographical series titled, English Men of Letters, which was edited by John Morley and written by different authors. This book is no. 24 of 36 in the series. One ad in the back lists other books in the series that had been released to date. Biography of David Hume (1711-1776) was a Scottish philosopher, writer, historian, and economist. He figured prominently during the Scottish Enlightenment. The biography discusses both his life and philsophy.

Scarce reconstruction-era Selma, Alabama bookseller ticket for Boyd's Book Store affixed at rear pastedown's top right; online research fails to reveal the operating years of Boyd's Book Store but the retailer is mentioned in John Hardy's 1879 book SELMA; HER INSTITUTIONS AND HER MEN as well as in September and October 1883 advertisements in the Selma newspaper THE ALABAMA BAPTIST which specify Robert S. Wetmore as proprietor and with the shop as "Head Quarters for Base Ball, Croquet, etc." (a June 1882 ad includes lawn tennis).
