Time and the depletion of the gold mines took a heavy enough toll of these picturesque and storied cities. When Jim Morley heard of the impending Freeway plan which might obliterate many an historic shrine… in the area, he took up his camera to record what he could. Fortunately, with his talent for timeless photographs and the help of Doris Foley to tell the stories belonging with them, this book has emerged, and it is a fitting tribute to these historically important cities. Grass Valley and Nevada City were the focal points of an area from which as much gold was mined as from the Comstock Lode. Today reminders of the fierce activity still can be found in the piney hills, and many a fortune made there lives on where it has drifted elsewhere. Lola Montez, Lotta Crabtree and Emma Nevada were some of the characters attracted to the gold cities-but the precious metal alone was not the only attraction. For many the splendid houses of the nabobs were a point of civilization in the wooly West, along with the scenic delights of mountains, streams and the bright colorings of autumn. This is a sensitive photographic record which covers over a century's worth of history of a unique gold mining area. It's rewarding. Fine. excellent condition, first printing.
