Paperback. Condition: New. Brand new softcover book! ; THE MARTYRDOM OF JOSEPH SMITH by President John Taylor is probably the most complete and detailed account of the events at Carthage which took the lives of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. An eyewitness and participant, President Taylor elaborates on the activities leading to imprisonment; the Prophet's foreboding of pending death; the various visits and conversations which took place in the jail; and the petitions and correspondence with Governor Ford discussing those events and the promise of state protection. This is a very personalized and readable account. THE MORMONS was an address by Col. Thomas L. Kane delivered before the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1850. Although Col. Kane was not a member of the LDS Church, he was sympathetic to the misrepresentations against and the persecutions suffered by the Saints. He wrote, "I have not yet heard the single charge against them as a community - against their habitual purity of life, their integrity of dealing, their toleration of religious differences in opinion, their regard for the laws, or their devotion to the constitutional government under which we live - that I do not, from my own observation, or the testimony of others, know to be unfounded. ; 5" x 8"; 106 pages.

The text block is cracked at the rear, but is still very sturdy. From the Introduction- "When speaking at St. George, Utah, to gather people to build the irrigation system in Canada, Apostle John Taylor said that he could not see why anyone would stay in St. George country with such a country as Canada available to live in. He got called on that. One settler told him flatly that they had been called to settle that country and they would stay there and build it up as they were told to do. And so they did, unless specifically called to go elsewhere. They loved the beauty of those bare mountains more than any place on earth. But the same fierce loyalty brought people from all the Mormon settlements on special call to settle Canada and build an irrigation system.".

cloth. Mormons (illustrator). 8vo. cloth. (iv), pp. 183-239. This scarce offprint of Mormon bibliography first appeared in the Bulletin of the New York Public Library, March, 1909, and is both early and quite extensive, describing almost 1750 items arranged alphabetically by author (Besterman 4021). A fine copy. A large majority of the books were collected by William Berrian, from whose estate they were bought in December, 1899, by Helen Miller Gould and presented to the library.

The history of Utah is the history of the Mormons. Although the Spanish conquistadors may have visited what is now Utah as early as 1519, the first true exploration was by Father Escalante in 1776. In 1824, Jim Bridger discovered the Great Salt Lake, and by 1830 trappers were using the trail across Utah from Santa Fe to California. Brigham Young led the Mormons to the Great Basin in 1847. In the spring of 1848, a plague of crickets threatened the first crops but the sea gulls descended on them. A monument to the gulls stands in Salt Lake City, and it is against the law to harm these birds in Utah. While the Mormons were forced to flee from the midwest, a battalion of Mormon soldiers were making history for the very country whose citizens harassed them." - from the description booklet.
