Die Erinnerungen an dieses Abkommen trennt bis heute die Erinnerungsgemeinschaften in Ost und West. Für die Länder Ost- und Mitteleuropas hatte die Unterzeichnung des Hitler-Stalin-Pakts am 23. August 1939 schwerwiegende Folgen. Eine Woche später überfiel Deutschland Polen und löste den Zweiten Weltkrieg aus. Nur weitere zwei Wochen später begann auch die Sowjetunion mit Angriffen auf die Länder Ost- und Mitteleuropas. Beide Seiten annektierten gewaltsam Territorien und beendeten die Unabhängigkeit ganzer Staaten. Ihre Besatzungspolitik war von massenhafter tödlicher Gewalt geprägt. Mit dem Angriff des Deutschen Reichs auf Sowjetunion am 22. Juni 1941 endete die Übereinkunft der Diktatoren abrupt. Die Folgen des Pakts aber blieben in Ost- und Mitteleuropa durch die erneute sowjetische Okkupation 1944 und den sich anschließenden Kalten Krieg bis zum Zerfall der Sowjetunion 1991 bestehen. Viele der heutigen europäischen Grenzen gehen auf diesen Pakt zurück. Deshalb leben die Erinnerungen an die Ereignisse von 1939 bis 1941 fort und prägen die Gesellschaft und Politik der Staaten Ost- und Mitteleuropas bis heute. Mit der Osterweiterung der Europäischen Union 2004 wurden diese Perspektiven zwar zunehmend lauter geäußert, dennoch wollen sie bis heute nicht alle hören. Der zweisprachige (deutsch u. englisch) Band erscheint zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung, die anlässlich des 85. Jahrestags der Unterzeichnung des Paktes ab dem 23. August 2024 im Museum Berlin-Karlshorst gezeigt wurde.
