Laminated Illustrated Boards. Condition: Very Good +. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition (as such). In 1863, Miss Jemima took a three-week holiday in Switzerland. Jemima Morrell came from a middle-class Yorkshire family, and certainly had the means to travel. But few English women ventured abroad alone in those days. For Miss Jemima, as indeed for many other young women in her circumstances, the prospect of making an unescorted tour of the continent was simply unthinkable. So Miss Jemima found her opportunity to travel by signing up for the first tour that Thomas Cook led to Switzerland. Cook was of course already an old hand at excursions. He had ushered thousands towards the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, and four years later secured concessions for travel across the Channel. In the years thereafter, he escorted groups to Brussels and Cologne, venturing up the Rhine as far as Baden-Baden and Strasbourg. In 1863, Cook pushed further south. The Alps beckoned. Thus it was that Miss Jemima found herself standing on 26 June 1963 in the company of several dozen other ladies and gentlemen on the railway platform at London Bridge At this at the uncomfortably early hour of six in the morning. The party proceeded by train to Newhaven (not a drearier port anywhere, Miss Jemima observed in her diary), and thence to Dieppe and Paris. By the time Cook's party returned to London three weeks later, Miss Jemima had walked over glaciers and experienced scenes of unsurpassed grandeur in the Alps. The details of Miss Jemima's journey would have been long forgotten had the traveller not kept a diary. This copy is the uncommon reprint of the book first published in 1963. It was published by Routledge and the Thomas Cook archives as the second volume in a series of 4 in Cook's History of Tourism Series. The pictures, text and map are as in the first edition but with an additional photo of the original party which went to Switzerland with Jemima which is not found in the first edition. The book is clean, tight and unmarked and very good+ and the clipped now protected d/w is very good.…

Couverture souple. Condition: Très bon. Poids: 330gr.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. xii 112 plus Appendix I and Appendix II, illustrated with black and white plates. The jacket is lightly rubbed and chipped at the head and tail of the spine, its verso badly foxed; The number '314' is neatly written on the front end paper; there is a stain on the blank outer edge of page 66 which could be a printer's fault. Overall a clean, unmarked copy in tight binding. "Say hello to Jemima Morrell, a plucky woman from Yorkshire who had a spirit for true adventure. So much so that in 1863, at 31 years of age, she, along with three other lady friends, joined excursionist Thomas Cook on his FIRST guided tour of the Swiss Alps.Fully corseted and swathed from head to toe in heavy garments, dark crinoline, lace-up boots and donning a parasol, she looked more ready for a walk in the park than a traipse across the rugged Swiss Alps; in this instance the Mer de Glace in Chamonix, France. She belonged to the Junior United Alpine Club, a determined gang, to be sure, as five fellow members joined her on the Alpine adventure, including her younger brother, William. Their itinerary was grueling - awake at 4am every morning, went to bed late, and endured all weathers; all the while dressed in Victorian attire. Some days the women walked 17 miles plus." We know how tough the adventure was 'cause Jemima kept a diary, discovered by family members one hundred years later in 1963; the amazing account was published under the title: "Miss Jemima's Swiss Journal: The First Conducted Tour of Switzerland" The most crucial change was that it made going abroad for a holiday feasible and affordable. Up until then you needed both time and money to reach the Alps - just the journey there by coach took two weeks - but Cook changed that by using the railways and negotiating group discounts for the tickets. For the first time the middle classes could reach Switzerland and take a holiday there for two weeks and a few pounds. That was a seismic shift in the way people viewed foreign travel. It was no longer the preserve of the elite but something for everyone. Then on the back of his Swiss success, Cook added Italy, Egypt, India and so on until he was a world brand. And he introduced hotel vouchers, train passes and travellers' cheques to take the hassle out of going abroad. It was the birth of the modern travel industry.(Radu Stinghe).…

Hardcover. Condition: gut. Erste Aufl. März 1832 in Selby, Yorkshire, geboren. (Wikipedia) In deutscher Sprache. 159, (3) pages. 8° (130 x 210mm). …
