In fact, admittedly Chafetz was not interested in this prospect even when it was offered to him. He thought alcoholics were inferior people because of the prevailing belief in America at the time that those who abused alcohol were immoral rather than struggling with a disease. . . . .As fate would have it, the only position available to him upon graduation from medical school was to start a state-sponsored treatment center. He unenthusiastically accepted the position. However, within a few months of working with an alcoholic population, his attitudes rapidly started to change. . . . . .Abstinence was part of the problem, according to Chafetz, in reference to the issue of alcoholism in the US. He felt Prohibition had failed and as a culture we needed to find a balanced view of alcohol and its place in our society. Chafetz advocated moderate drinking rather than complete abstinence and pointed to scientific research that supported the health advantages of moderation with alcohol. . .
