Hardback. J. Malcolm Morris, Michael Joseph. Author: J. Malcolm MorrisBinding: HardbackPublished: Michael Joseph, 1954Condition:Book: GoodJacket: Wear and tearPages: Yellowed, price clippedMarkings: Previous ownerThe Wise Bamboo presents a vivid account of postwar Japan through the lens of its most storied institution, the Imperial Hotel. Classified as historical nonfiction, the book chronicles the hotel's role during the Allied occupation, illustrating its transformation into a hub of diplomacy, intrigue, and cultural exchange. Morris details the personalities who passed through its corridors, including generals, journalists, and Japanese elites, while arguing that the hotel served as a microcosm of Japan's complex negotiation between tradition and modernity. The narrative balances architectural insight with political observation, offering readers a textured portrait of a nation in flux. Hardback.
