The book is a true joint effort of four kindred spirits who found themselves in the Peking of 1937 - 1938, on the eve of World War II, but where the Sino-Japanese War had already begun. Basic research was conducted house-to-house, and all photographs were taken then as well. The collaborators are George Kates, the Brooklyn Museum Curator of Oriental Art for the text; his sister Beatrice Kates and friend Caroline Bieber selected the pieces and took measurements; and Hedda Morrison took the photographs.
