Condition: Poor. No. 3 Map of Palestine from the latest authorities. Published by S.E. Morse & Co., New York, 1843-1844, as part of the Cerographic Bible Atlas. One of five maps issued in this landmark American atlas, produced using the cerographic (wax engraving) printing process invented by Sidney Edwards Morse, brother of tel…egraph pioneer Samuel F.B. Morse. The geographic content derives primarily from the surveys of Edward Robinson and Eli Smith, whose biblical geography fieldwork in the Holy Land (1838) represented a foundational achievement in 19th-century scholarly cartography. The map depicts ancient Palestine with tribal divisions, settlements, cities, villages, roads, rivers, and mountains shown by hachures. Includes an inset of the Northern Part of Mt. Lebanon. A legend identifies cities, towns, villages, wadys, rivers, mountains, perennial watercourses, periodical streams, and ancient place names. Tribal divisions (Judah, Simeon, Benjamin, Dan, Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and others) are clearly delineated. Significant edge tears and paper losses at corners and along right margin, including most of the Legend; heavy toning and foxing consistent with age; fold lines stressed. The primary value is that the central image area and most place names remain legible. Please review photos carefully before purchase. Provenance: Discovered laid into a Rand McNally world atlas dating to 1886, suggesting the map had been preserved within the volume.
