Condition: Very Good. Hardcover, 144 pages. Published on the one hundredth anniversary of the death of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), Reflections in a Looking Glass presents Carroll's remarkable photography. Richly illustrated, this important book presents seldom-seen works-most of them formal portraits and staged scenes that combine Carroll's famous childlike sense of play with the Victorian propriety that characterized his age. Also included in Reflections are selected drawings by Lewis Carroll and by John Tenniel, who illustrated the original Alice books. The central text by Morton N. Cohen, the world's leading authority on Lewis Carroll, provides an in-depth account of Carroll's experimentations in the new medium of photography. His hobby opened the door to many of his "child friends" as well as to leading artistic and literary figures of the day, all of whom came to Carroll's studio to sit for their portraits. Excerpts from Carroll's diaries combine with Cohen's annotated captions to make this book an invaluable resource. The book also includes a Preface by Mark Haworth-Booth, curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Afterword is by Roy Flukinger, curator of photographs at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas, Austin, the source collection for much of the material in this extraordinary book. This is No. XLVII in The Publications of the Champlain Society series. Edited with an Introduction and Notes by Desmond Morton and Reginald H. Roy. This volume contains a collection of edited transcriptions of telegrams exchanged between Adolphe-Philippe Caron (1843-1908), the Canadian Minister of Militia and Defence, and commanders, officers, contractors, and other individuals with the Canadian government during the North-West Rebellion of 1885. Caron served under Prime Minister John A. Macdonald. He was also a member of Canadian Parliament from 1867-1900 who represented, over the years, Quebec County, Rimouski, and Three Rivers and St. Maurice. These telegrams provide the Canadian government's perspective of the North-West Rebellion. The North-West Rebellion (also, the North-West Resistance) was an armed uprising of the Metis led by Louis Riel and members of the Cree and Assiniboine tribes. After his exile in the United States, Riel returned to help established the Provisional Government of Saskatchewan to resist the Canadian government. This was Riel's last stand against the Canadian government as he sought to protect the rights of the Metis, Indigenous people, and French-speaking citizens of Canada. Riel and the Metis had achieved many of their goals in the 1869 Resistance in Red River Colony. This was not to be the case in the North-West Rebellion. After failed negotiations and several battles, the Metis, Cree, and Assiniboine were overpowered by Canadian forces who had access to more supplies, weapons, ammunition, and ready transport. After the uprising, Riel was tried and executed which further divided the rift between English and French Canada. Front colophon: "One Thousand Copies of this Volume have been printed for the Champlain Society. Fifty are reserved for Editorial purposes. The remaining Nine Hundred and Fifty are supplied only to elected members of the Society and to Subscribing Libraries. This copy is No. 654.".

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a statistical framework to evaluate the skill of market timers and security analysts. The author argues that forecasts can have positive value even if they are not perfectly accurate. The book first establishes a basic model of market timing to explore how patterns of returns correspond to the patterns of returns from following certain option investment strategies. This isomorphic correspondence is then used as a basis to develop both parametric and nonparametric statistical procedures to test for superior forecasting skills. The author shows that it is possible to measure the contributions to portfolio performance from market timing and security analysis and that these measurements do not depend on any assumptions about the distribution of returns on securities. The book concludes that while the efficient markets theory and the random walk hypothesis have been soundly criticized and even refuted, there may in fact be exploitable opportunities in the market for above-average returns. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
