Hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. No Jacket. Originally published in 1880 this is the 1893 printing. If you need a nice copy of this title, this is not it. Most if not all the leading edges of the text block show the tide line of a water stain and corresponding rippling of the pages. Light wear to the binding. A portrait Brer Ra…bbit gold-stamped on the front cover. A Christmas greeting in pencil from 1893 on the first blank end sheet. The book is complete, but because of the cosmetic issues outlined, it is sold as a reading/research copy. Frederick s. Church and James H. Moser (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: New. First Thus. This copy is in new condition bound in burgundy cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling and decoration to the spine and the upper board. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. There is a neat inscription to the f.e.p. There is a clear acetate cover in new condition. Internation…al postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. A wonderful book, full of wit, black humor and love between and ex-slave and a young white boy. In spite of the fact that some of the words are no longer "politically correct" this book is a must for all those persons who would like a closer look at what life was really like in the South in the years following the Civil War, and what gave great joy to the reader or listener. Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post-Reconstruction era Atlanta, and he produced seven Uncle Remus books. He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which was his interpretation of the Deep South African-American language of the time. For these framing and stylistic choices, Harris's collection has garnered controversy since its publication. Many of these stories are believed to have Creek Indian influence too. Ref CC 7. Frederick S Church & James H. Moser (illustrator).

Harris, a white Southern journalist, collected these folktales from enslaved and formerly enslaved African Americans on Georgia plantations. Serialized in newspapers across the United States, the tales proved hugely popular and this first edition was a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic. The books were responsible for compounding racist stereotypes and disseminating them across generations of readers, as well as portraying a rosy picture of the American South. At the same time, Harris was the first folklorist to make a serious effort to preserve Southern black oral traditions and his books are an important resource for ethnologists and contemporary writers attempting to reconstruct traditional folktales.BAL 7100.
