Edizione originale dell'opera più celebre del pensatore bergamasco. E' una brillante e corposa analisi dei retroscena che hanno portato alla nascita della dottrina chiamata vetero-cattolicesimo, le cui comunità si sono poi raccolte nell'Unione di Utrecht (1889). Inimicatosi l'inquisitore locale per via dello zelo gesuitico, il Mozzi era prima ricorso curiosamente alla stamperia massona di Poschiavo per la pubblicazione anonima de La vera idea del giansenismo (1781).
