A visually appealing California cabinet card of a woman in Scottish Highland dress, identified as Mrs. Norman Beaton. The portrait likely relates to Scottish immigrant, ethnic, theatrical, or fraternal culture in late nineteenth-century California, where Scottish societies, Caledonian clubs, Highland games, and public costume display helped maintain and perform ethnic identity. The 1900 census counted roughly 1,140 Scotland-born residents in Alameda County and more than 2,000 in nearby San Francisco, giving late nineteenth-century Oakland a small but visible Scottish-American context for portraits of this kind. Light wear, toning, and soiling; very good. Cabinet card photograph measuring approximately 4 ¼ x 6 ½ inches. Full-length studio portrait of an identified woman, Mrs. Norman Beaton, posed in Highland dress with plaid skirt, sash, cap, and shoulder brooch before a painted landscape backdrop. Photographer?s imprint on mount: ?F. M. Harkness / 556 12th St. / East Oakland.. …
