First Edition, xxiii + 108pp, 34 illustrations, a fine prize binding of Winchester College, bound in three quarter green calf, with the armorial gilt stamp on the front board showing the arms of Winchester College's founder: William of Wykeham, raised bands with gilt stamping and gilt lett…ering on spine, top edge gilt, Provenance: the presentation bookplate on the front pastedown shows the volume to be a prize granted by Montague John Rendall (1862-1950), Master and later Headmaster at Winchester College, who had been a distinguished student at Trinity College in the University of Cambridge. Rendall presented the book in 1917 to Winchester student Donald George Lowndes (1899-1956). Later, Lowndes became an army colonel who served in India with the Royal Garhwal Rifles. He was also a dedicated naturalist, botanist, and entomologist. Appropriately enough, the prize granted by Rendall to Lowndes, with this book as its token, was for excelling in the study of natural history, very good condition, W. Heffer & Sons Ltd, Cambridge, 1912. * excellent monograph on the Genus Viola. A beautiful volume (probably a commissioned binding), remarkably well-preserved, with the gilt still sparklingly bright. ILLUSTRATED (illustrator).
