This unconventional collection of short stories delves into the untamed landscapes and forgotten corners of the American West, capturing the raw spirit of its inhabitants. The author paints a vivid portrait of a bygone era, where danger, resilience, and a touch of the unexpected collide. From a servant with an unquenchable thirst for mixed biscuits to a mine owner's surprising encounter with a young Englishman, each tale offers a glimpse into the lives of those who dared to venture into the unknown. Through their experiences, the book explores themes of deception, ambition, and the unyielding pursuit of fortune. Ultimately, it reveals the indomitable spirit of the human heart, capable of both great adventure and unexpected redemption in the face of adversity. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1895. First American edition. Tan decorative cloth, designed and lettered in red and gilt. A bit of soiling to cloth at spine and edges of covers, inner front hinge a bit loose, a decent very good copy in general, quite attractive. The British edition was published by Blackwood in 1896. The story of an "unconventional" group of expatriates in Mexico. This looks to be fiction, but an earlier book, "A Strange Career", is a memoir of John Gladwyn Jebb; it has an introduction by H. Rider Haggard, in which Haggard states that he believed Jebb had the key to finding Montezuma's treasure.
