As her father, John Lyon, becomes a leader of the rebellion against the Earl of Flanders, Anna laments the increasingly bloody struggle. The author analyzes the motivations of this rebellion and the Countess of Artois's ruthless machinations against Lyon, showing how Ghent becomes a proxy battleground for the warring factions. As Anna navigates her increasingly dangerous life, she questions the allegiances she has long held, and indeed, the very nature of justice and mercy. Ultimately, this book is a compelling portrait of one woman's experience in tumultuous times, while also masterfully illustrating the broader historical forces that have shaped the course of Western history.
