Leather bound. [8], xviii, 262, [6] pages. Illustrations. Bibliography of Reports of the Trial. Footnotes. Tabular Data. Appendix. Originally published as part of the Notable British Trials series. This special edition has been privately printed for the members of The Notable Trials Library by Areata Graphics/Kingsport. The introduction was written for this edition by Alan M. Dershowitz, Professor of Law, Harvard university. Film was prepared from the first English edition of 1928. New type matted was composed in Caledonia. The text paper was especially made for this edition by the P. H. Glatfelter Company. The volume has been quarter-bound in genuine leathers. Endleaves are a specially commissioned original marbled design by Iris Nevins. Edges are gilded, the spine is stamped in 22-karat gold. Cover stampings and design of the edition by Daniel B. Bianchi and Selma Ordewer. In January 1649, Parliament established a High Court of Justice, under the presidency of John Bradshaw. On 20 January, the trial of Charles I began in Westminster Hall before some 70 Commissioners; it lasted until 27 January. Charles was accused of devising 'a wicked design to erect and uphold in himself an unlimited and tyrannical power to rule according to his Will, and to overthrow the Rights and Liberties of the People'. In carrying out this strategy, he had 'traitorously and maliciously levied war against the present Parliament and the people therein represented', and renewed the war after his defeat with the sole objective of 'upholding of a personal interest of Will and Power and pretended prerogative to himself and his family against the public interest, common right, liberty, justice and peace of the people of this nation'. On behalf of the people of England, the King was impeached 'as a Tyrant, Traitor, Murderer, and a public and implacable Enemy to the Commonwealth of England'. On 30 January 1649, Charles I was beheaded with an axe on a scaffold outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall. Like new [Removed from shrinkwrap for cataloguing] Presumed first of this Special Edition, first printing thus.
