Dust jacket with a creased back flap. *** "Jean Renoir: A Life in Pictures is the first biography of this master of modern cinema--the director of Grand Illusion, Rules of the Game, The River, and other classics. Celia Bertin tells Renoir's story from his magical childhood to his first success in films, from his encounter with European fascism to his final years as the beloved 'Frenchman from Beverly Hills.' With the help of Renoir's family, Bertin interviewed everyone who knew the director in Paris, Provence, Bourgogne, and Los Angeles. Using first-hand accounts along with previously unpublished materials, she places this colorful, charming, and brilliant figure in the context of his time, his culture, and the history of cinema. Awarded the prize Therouanne by the Academie francaise in 1986, this acclaimed biography is now available in English. 'The spectacle of real life,' Renoir wrote, 'is a thousand times richer than the most beguiling inventions of our imagination.' And his own life makes the point. He lived a privileged childhood in the luminous world of his father, the famous Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir. As a horseman and aircraft pilot in World War I, he was badly wounded at the age of twenty. After the war and his father's death, he seemed destined for a life of sportscars and glamourous women--he first took up filmmaking to glorify his beautiful young wife. But soon movies became his passion and his work grew astoundingly original. He opposed the rise of fascism in Europe, yet was approached by Mussolini to direct Tosca. In 1940, Renoir moved to America--where he became the mentor to a younger generation of cineastes. He died in Beverly Hills in 1979. / Celia Bertin, novelist and historian, is the author of many books, including Marie Bonaparte: A Life, which is available in English. She is chevalier de la L?gion d'Honneur and chevalier des Arts et Lettres." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.…

Paperback. Condition: New. "Menis opens for consideration an immense range of significant poetic possibilities, not the least of which is that of an ethical sense for the term."-Bryn Mawr Classical Review"Henceforth no one will be able to claim that menis merely connotes strong emotion. Muellner has demonstrated that menis is a critical component of the workings of both the human and divine cosmos. And that is no small accomplishment."-American Journal of Philology"It is high praise, and deserved, to say that this study will take its place. as one of the works that have given us insights into truly fundamental issues in Homer."-Classical JournalLeonard Muellner's goal is to restore the Greek word for the anger of Achilles, menis, to its social, mythical, and poetic contexts. His point of departure is the anthropology of emotions. He believes that notions of anger vary between cultures and that the particular meaning of a word such as menis needs to emerge from a close study of Greek epic. Menis means more than an individual's emotional response. On the basis of the epic exemplifications of the word, Muellner defines the term as a cosmic sanction against behavior that violates the most basic rules of human society. To understand the way menis functions, Mueller stresses both the power and the danger that accrue to a person who violates such rules. Transgressive behavior has both a creative and a destructive aspect.…
