Hardback. In this nature classic, the celebrated conservationist chronicles his summer shepherding in the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada mountains. In the summer of 1869, John Muir made his first long trip to Yosemite. When a friend offered him the chance to accompany his flock of sheep and a shepherd to the high pastures of th…e Sierra, it was an opportunity Muir could not resist. My First Summer in the Sierra is the journal he kept of those summer days, of the wildlife and plant life, and of his explorations into the magical places of the mountains. Founder of the Sierra Club, and its president until his death, preserver of his beloved Yosemite as a national park, Muir was a spirit so free that all he did to prepare for an expedition was to "throw some tea and bread into an old sack and jump over the back fence." In a world confronting the deterioration of the natural environment and an ever-quickening pace of life, the attraction of Muir's writings has never been greater. 1989, First thus, first printing. A near fine copy only marked by a few tiny spots on the top edge. The d/w is unclipped and very good with sun fading of the spine. Now in a protective cover. Scans available if required. Michael McCurdy (illustrator).

Add to basketCondition: NEAR FINE. First thus. One of Muir's most accessible and delightful books, originally published in 1911 (over 40 years after this summer of 1869). It begins with a single brief paragraph dismissing the Great Central Valley - "in it there are only two seasons, spring and summer. This strikingly beautiful edition reprod…uces the 1988 limited edition by Yolla Bolly Press, illustrated with 12 wood engravings by Michael McCurdy and with a foreword and notes by Frederick Turner. Large format. xii, 162 pp plus colophon. Fine in a near fine dust jacket (as new, but with sunning to the spine and edges of the dust jacket, as is unfortunately common with this title).
