Assollant (1909) The Bibliothèque Rose is a French collection of illustrated children's books created in 1856 by Hachette publishers and intended for children aged six to twelve. The collection was created after Louis Hachette took a train journey with Napoleon III and Count Eugène de Ségur, administrator of the Eastern Railway Company. The idea took root when the Countess told him about the stories his wife, Countess de Ségur, invented for their children. It was she who launched the collection (which only acquired its pink color four years later), originally as "Les Nouveaux Contes de Fées" ("New Fairy Tales").Adorned with numerous black and white illustrations throughout. Collated, lacking plate leaves to: second volume (Les Poches) (one plate); two to third volume (Belle Sage); one to fourth volume (Mésaventures); two to fifth volume (Ginette) as well as partial loss to page five; one to sixth volume (Magali); one to seventh volume (La Disparition); two to eighth volume (Un Bon Gros) as well as partial loss to page seventeen. In the publisher's original red cloth with pictorial gilt to boards. Externally, generally smart, all volumes with shelf wear to the extremities and bumping to spine heads and tails. All volumes with the odd mark to the boards. Pink marks to gilt of front and black streak to rear boards of third volume (Belle Sage). Mark to spine of fifth volume (Ginette). Hinges starting but firm to ninth volume (L'auberge). Rear hinge of fifth volume cracked and starting, loss to rear paste down. Damp stains to rear board of Bon Petit volume. Front hinge cracked and partially separated from text block of Bon Petit volume. Separation of front hinge, and front board, from text block of earliest volume (1864). Internally, firmly bound. Lacking plate leaves to: second volume (Les Poches) (one plate); two to third volume (Belle Sage); one to fourth volume (Mésaventures); two to fifth volume (Ginette) as well as partial loss to page five; one to sixth volume (Magali); one to seventh volume (La Disparition); two to eighth volume (Un Bon Gros) as well as partial loss to page seventeen. Tears and marks to front endpaper of eleventh volume (Bon Petit). Pages slightly age toned but clean and bright with the odd spot throughout and heavier spotting only to first and last few leaves. Good. book.
