See images for condition. About the book >.>.> This book, *Artist-Potters in England* by Muriel Rose, explores the evolution and significance of pottery…as an art form, particularly focusing on the contributions and challenges faced by French artist-potters from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Rose investigates how, unlike in China and the Far East where pottery has traditionally been esteemed alongside painting and sculpture, European perspectives on pottery as a serious artistic endeavor emerged only within the last century. Historically, many pottery masterpieces were created by craftsmen who did not identify as artists, largely adhering to established traditions.Beginning in the 1800s, certain European artists began to experiment with pottery, drawing inspiration from Far Eastern ceramics. The unearthing of ancient Chinese pottery artifacts during railway construction further ignited global interest in the medium. Paris played a pivotal role in the mid-nineteenth century, fostering enthusiasm for oriental art, particularly Japanese pottery, which inspired the nascent movement of individual pottery-making in Europe. However, French potters in this era faced numerous challenges. A lack of precise knowledge regarding the chemistry of ceramics and the relationships between different types of glazes hampered their efforts to replicate admired oriental techniques.Despite these obstacles, an appreciation for traditional methods persisted, as evident in the rural potteries of France that supplied practical wares for everyday use. Rose's work encapsulates the fusion of tradition and innovation within the pottery craft, illuminating the struggles and triumphs of those who sought to elevate pottery to the status of fine art.
