Scarce first edition (1961) of Oko the Brave, a children's adventure novel by Dorothy Hodgetts and Muriel Wray, issued by the British Christian publisher Lutterworth Press as part of the Pathway Series. The story follows Oko, a courageous boy from a West African village, whose bravery and integrity are tested through encounters with smugglers, priests, and forest spirits. Like others in the Pathway Series, it blends moral themes with vividly drawn adventure, intended for young readers of mission-school libraries. This copy is in Very Good condition: tight binding, lightly toned pages, and bright interior illustration. Ex-library stamp on front endpaper from Christian and Missionary Alliance, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, with previous owner name in ink ("Lauffler.") Some residue and offsetting to rear pastedown from an old pocket removal; boards show mild shelfwear and a small mark to lower spine. Despite modest handling, the text remains clean and complete. An appealing survivor of this uncommon juvenile title. Dorothy Hodgetts and Muriel Wray collaborated on several mid-century children's books published by Christian presses. Their works emphasize moral courage, missionary themes, and cross-cultural empathy, characteristic of Lutterworth's educational fiction program during the 1950s-60s.
