Seller: Storbeck's, Georgetown, TX, U.S.A.
Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. 2nd Revised and Enlarged Edition. 268 pages. In this new and enlarged edition of his popular book, the author has added not only a number of new entries but also new information to existing entries. Nearly 3,600 counties, cities, mountains, and lakes are listed alphabetically, with such information as origin of name, date of founding and abandonment of towns, existence of a post office, changes of name, and other pertinent details. The story of its place names shows the entire panorama of Oklahoma history. The state has occupied a peculiar position as the converging point of many and varied civilizations, and its names are a reflection of the romance of its racial and pioneering past. The music of Spanish and the guttural of Indian tongues are to be found in close juxtaposition in the names of geographical features. French, English, and even Bohemian names produce a medley of nomenclature probably unequaled anywhere else in the University States. The author has drawn his materials from information supplied by historical archives, government records, and the recollections of private individuals, in addition to making use of Charles Gould's pioneering work on the subject, published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 1933 and long out of print. George H. Shirk, prominent attorney and former mayor of Oklahoma City, was president of the Oklahoma Historical Society. A well-known authority on Oklahoma history, he was the author of many articles published in The Chronicles of Oklahoma, the quarterly journal of the Society. Historian Muriel H. Wright, longtime editor of Chronicles of Oklahoma, has been recognized for her distinguished career by the University of Oklahoma and by other public and civic organizations.

First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Brand new and unread copy; very fresh and bright condition; gift quality! Full-color pictorial wrapper with gold and blue lettering. 300 new and unread informative and historical pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illustrations! "More than a century and a half ago Oklahoma was chosen to become the home of the red man in the United States. Today, sixty-seven tribes as widely divergent as the Five Civilized Tribes from the Southeast, the Plains tribes from the West, the Seneca from Ohio, and the indigenous Osage reside within its boundaries. More Indian tribes have retained their character and identity in Oklahoma than in any other state of the Union. At the same time, the American Indian in Oklahoma is highly respected colleague of his white contemporary in business, the professions, art, music, and in every other walk of life. it is significant that there are no reservations in the state. Most of the Indians are modern Americans in customs, habits, and dress and have the same life-style as any other citizen of the state. Nowhere else in the United States can be found such a blending of the blood and the civilization of the Anglo-American and the American Indian. This guide to the Indian Tribes of Oklahoma lists alphabetically the tribes within the state- twenty-nine of which have retained their tribal identity in the jurisdiction of the various Indian agencies, and thirty-eight small tribes and fragments of tribes no longer recognized separately. No comparable work has been issued since Frederick Webb Hodge's Handbook of American Indians North of Mexico was published in two volumes in 1910 and 1911. The present encyclopedic treatment of the subject of Oklahoma Indians provide the following information for most tribes: origin of the tribal name, linguistic stock, physical characteristics, present location, numbers, history, government and organization, contemporary life and culture, and ceremonials and public dances. In addition, there is a list of suggested reading pertaining to each tribe. Volume 33 in The Civilizations of the American Indian Series.".
