At the same time, they offer a running commentary on the slow and (at least until 1887-88) uncertain progress of the abolitionist cause in Brazil.

Ali, a cearense Jovita Alves Feitosa, de dezessete anos, decidiu alistar-se, vestindo-se de homem. Seu desejo era ir a campo vingar as mulheres brasileiras maltratadas pelos paraguaios no Mato Grosso. Descoberto o disfarce, Jovita foi, ainda assim, aceita como voluntária pelo presidente da província, no posto de segundo-sargento. Transformada em celebridade do dia para a noite, fez um percurso triunfal de Teresina ao Rio de Janeiro. Mas, por fim, a Secretaria da Guerra recusou sua incorporação como combatente: às mulheres cabia somente o trabalho voluntário como enfermeiras. Frustrada, Jovita voltou a Teresina, mas acabou retornando ao Rio de Janeiro, onde passou a viver como prostituta. Reapareceu nos noticiários em 1867, ao suicidar-se com uma punhalada no coração. A razão imediata teria sido a partida do amante galês para a Inglaterra. Depois de longo silêncio, nos últimos 25 anos o nome de Jovita reapareceu em livros que mesclam mito e realidade. A prostituição e a morte por suicídio de certa forma desapareceram do imaginário nacional e para muitos ela morreu em batalha. Sua memória foi também recuperada como heroína da luta das mulheres pela igualdade de direitos. Em dezembro de 2018, Jovita foi oficialmente inscrita no Panteão dos Heróis da Pátria.Em "Jovita Alves Feitosa: voluntária da pátria, voluntária da morte", José Murilo de Carvalho, um dos maiores historiadores em atividade no país, reproduz e analisa preciosos documentos de época, que compõem um quadro rico e complexo.
