About the book >.>.> The initial incentives for the industry's development in the County derived from the Industrial Revolution with its insatiable demand for an affordable and plentiful supply of bricks for housing and factories, other structures reflecting the new technologies and transport systems plus the social institutions of a changing society. But the downside, apparent even at the beginning, was its vulnerability to fluctuating economic factors and these remained potent influences throughout its history Using examples from the tabulated gazetteer entries (denoted in this text by the letter 'G' preceding the number) in conjunction with various historical sources, considerable progress has been made in the construction of an overall. About the book >.>.> This publication complements Phase 1, Western Somerset, but is intended to be complete in itself, except for additional notes in Chapter 4. Some material is therefore repeated, in a slightly amended form, for the benefit of new readers, and for ease of reference. Phase 2 sees the completion of this project, which started in a modest way in 1980, recording surviving mileposts and milestones in the Taunton area. This initial trial proved encouraging, and the work expanded to cover the western part of the present County of Somerset, the results being published as Phase 1 in 1985 after nearly 5 years of work, carried out with increasing speed and efficiency. The impetus did not slacken, and in spite of the greater travelling distances from our centre at Taunton, eastern Somerset has been covered in half the time. Al though the area is smaller, the number of routes covered is still 101, compared with 138 in Phase 1. In addition, thanks largely to the response to our appeal in Phase 1 for comments and suggesti.

About the book >.>.> This project began in 1980 with a modest investigation, carried out by the writers, of surviving mileposts and milestones in the Taunton area. Al though undertaken during the summer, the worst possible season for roadside vegetation, results were sufficiently encouraging for us to develop what vas, in effect, a feasibility study in the following year. Members of Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society surveyed routes of the former Taunton Turnpike Trust, and their work revealed a wide variety of wayside features as well as posing questions relating to the history and management of the roads themselves. In subsequent years, the authors have refined early recording techniques, and by combining fieldwork with historical research, have produced the present monograph. As far as is known, information in this format about roads is unique both locally and nationally, but it is inevitable that any innovative approach must have its shortcomings, especially as it involves the study of over 130 separate lengths o.
