Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. A press photograph is defined by its function, which is to infuse a text with visual meaning in the telling of a news story, Murray Moss writes in his introduction. Assembled from his own unique collection of archival, annotated, and published prints that were acquired in the past two years…from the photo morgues of a moribund newspaper industry, these original photographs are for the first time shown publicly without the newspaper text they were originally assigned to accompany. Rather, I have paired these images, at my own discretion, with other orphaned press images, putting them in dialogue, and in the process creating for each image a new narrativea new life, a third story, a tertium quid. In turns humorous, striking, mysterious, and always surprising these photographs reveal an undiscovered side of their personality through these pairings. Unwittingly, they have become starring characters in new narratives that are both revealing and delightful. Some are duets, or fugues. Moss writes, Some dance a pas de deux. Many are six degrees incarnate. And others are conversations between strangers who share a bench in the park and discover common ground. Reproduced at the actual size of the original photos, with both the front and the often annotated back presented with equal importance, these artifacts, retired now from their labors, are akin to those exceptional functional objects that have served their time and have later come to be appreciated, even coveted and exalted, for the extraordinary qualities that lie outside of their original function. Tertium Quid is a personal tribute by Murray Moss to a lost newspaper culture, a love letter to the often unsung press photographer, and a transformative elixir to the power of the image. *Tertium Quid is published in a limited edition of 1250 copies, each sequentially numbered. * Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. For almost twenty years, there was no cooler place for high design than MOSS, the groundbreaking New York design gallery. By combining the exclusivity of art (the gallery opened in Soho when it was the exclusive playground of art galleries), the glamour of fashion, and the theatricality of B…roadway MOSS the gallery itself became a stage and a catwalk, where design broke all barriers to be an important player. Murray Moss, the impresario behind the shop, became the leader arbiter of good and outrageous taste, along with his partner Franklin Getchell. He was able to present Philippe Starck lighting one week, 18th-century porcelain the next, and Tupperware in-between. By mixing high and low Moss the man and MOSS the gallery shifted the design conversation from the galleries of MoMA to a storefront in SoHo. Moss has been called "America's most closely watched purveyor of industrial design" (Washington Post), while his store has been called "the best design store in the world."(International Herald Tribune, July 2007).This is Murray Moss' and Franklin Getchell's charming, witty, and revealing story of how two struggling stage actors conquered, and redefined, the world of high design. From 1994 to 2012, MOSS was at the epicentre of contemporary design. A design gallery by name, MOSS was really considered by the adoring press and the cognoscente the high church of design, and Murray Moss was its pope. This is his memoir. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardback. Condition: New. A witty and revealing memoir of the mid-1990s, when high design became art and there was no more exclusive club for high design than MOSS. For almost twenty years the SoHo design gallery MOSS was the place where design, art, money, and glamour mixed. Murray Moss, the impresario behind the shop, and his…partner, Franklin Getchell, were the leading arbiters of good taste and the new-launching the careers of now-established designers such as Studio Job and Maarten Baas while bringing back into fashion eighteenth-century porcelain and Tupperware. By mixing high and low MOSS shifted the design conversation from the galleries of MoMA to a storefront in SoHo. Please Do Not Touch is their witty insider confessions of that exciting time. Natural storytellers, Moss and Getchell effortlessly weave entertaining and revealing tales that take the reader behind the scenes of MOSS's famous opening night parties and spectacular projects and partnerships with never-before-seen photographs from their personal archives. A memoir by two legends of modern design, Please Do Not Touch is sure to become a "bible" for cognoscenti and students alike-transporting lovers of modern design back to the time when high design first broke all barriers.
