Franz Xaver Murschhauser wurde im Sommer 1663 geboren. 1676 trat Murschhauser dem Chor und Orchester von St. Peter bei, wo er zunächst von dem Unterricht des Kirchenchordirektors Sigmund Auer und später, von 1684 bis 1693, des Hofkapellmeisters Johann Kaspar Kerll profitierte, was ihn nachhaltig prägte. Im Juli 1690 wurde Murschhauser, höchstwahrscheinlich auf Empfehlung seines Lehrers Johann Kaspar Kerll, gebeten, den krankheitsbedingt verhinderten Chorleiter der Münchner Frauenkirche, Ludwig Hölz, zu vertreten. Nach Hölz' Tod im Jahr 1691 trat Murschhauser dessen Nachfolge an und behielt diese Position bis zu seinem Tod. Das "Prototypon Longo-Breve Organicum" (etwa: "Prototypen für Orgelstücke, lang und kurz") erschien 1703 und 1707 in zwei Teilen in Nürnberg und umfasst acht Zyklen/Abschnitte mit insgesamt 46 Kompositionen. Diese bestehen aus unterschiedlich vielen Intonationen, Präambeln, Fugen, Canzonen, Toccaten und Finali, die als Präludien oder Postludien zu Figurenmusik konzipiert sind. Buch.
