SU mit geringen Läsuren. - Vorwort von Dr. Hanswernfried Muth, Direktor des Mainfränkischen Museums: " 'Ganz abscheulich sind jene, in den Dorfwirtshäusern nicht seltenen Glasbilder, auf welchen die Gewänder der Heil…igen mittels roter und blauer Kleckse, die Züge aber durch schwarze Linien ganz irokesenartig dargestellt werden. Ich habe vergessen, zu fragen, woher diese schrecklichen Bilder stammen . Ein gebildeter Curat, der nur einmal den Apoll von Belvedere gesehen hätte, der sollte seine ganze Energie daran setzen, um diese scheußlichen Popanzen zerschmettern zu lassen.' Anschaulich zeigt dieses verächtliche Urteil, das der Schriftsteller Ludwig Steub, geachteter und nicht unbedeutender Erforscher der Kultur der Alpenländer, 1846 erstmals ausgesprochen und 1871 nochmals wiederholt hat, wie fremd und ablehnend das gebildete Bürgertum des 19. Jahrhunderts dem Hinterglasbild gegenüberstand. Eine neue Bewertung der Hinterglasmalerei brachten zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhundert die Künstler des "Blauen Reiters", und des Expressionismus. 1918 meinte der Schweizer Schriftsteller Max Picard: 'Das Hinterglasbild ist das Volkslied in der Malerei'. Von den Künstlern angeregt, brachten volkskundliche Forschung, Sammler und Museen dem Hinterglasbild ein neues Interesse entgegen; heute kommt den zerbrechlichen Kostbarkeiten wieder allenthalben eine hohe Wertschätzung von seiten der Fachleute wie der Liebhaber zu." Die Sonderausstellung des Mainfränkischen Museums Würzburg vereinigt mit über 400 Objekten erstmals und vollständig alle Hinterglasbilder, die in öffentlichen Sammlungen Unterfrankens verwahrt werden. Zerstreut, teilweise deponiert und bisher weitgehend unbeachtet, werden sie durch diese Ausstellung der Öffentlichkeit ebenso wie der Forschung präsentiert, mit dem hier vorliegenden Ausstellungskatalog zugleich inventarisiert und allesamt abgebildet. Dieser Bestand umfaßt Zeugnisse der höfischen Kunst Würzburgs im 18. Jahrhundert ebenso wie die städtischen Maler aus Augsburg und anderen Orten, sie dokumentiert die malerhandwerkliche Erzeugung in Oberbayern, die hütten- und heimgewerblichen Zentren der Hinterglasmalerei in Ostbayern, in Oberösterreich und in Böhmen, greift aber auch in entferntere Bereiche, wie Italien, Spanien, Rumänien aus. An die Hinterglasmalerei des 20. Jahrhunderts wird mit einigen charakteristischen Bildern erinnert. Aktuellen Bezug gewinnt die Ausstellung durch die hier ebenfalls gezeigten beiden hinterglasbemalten Spiegelfelder, Rekonstruktionen des Würzburger Malers Wolfgang Lenz für die Wiederherstellung des Spiegelkabinetts in der Würzburger Residenz, dessen ursprüngliche Ausstattung durch den original erhaltenen Tisch dokumentiert ist. So wird in der Ausstellung die ganze kulturelle Spannweite und ästhetische Vielfalt der Hinterglasmalerei zum Ausdruck gebracht vom Volkstümlich-Naiven, zum bewußt künstlerisch Gestalteten. Veranlaßt wurde die Ausstellung durch die Übergabe einer bedeutenden Privatsammlung an zwei unterfränkische Museen: 1982 vertrauten Frau Irmgard Ludwig und Frau Gudrun Hahner die stattliche Sammlung von Hinterglasbildern, die der 1978 verstorbene Restaurator Walter Hahner zusammengetragen hatte, zu etwa gleichen Teilen der Obhut des Mainfränkischen Museums Würzburg und des Henneberg-Museums Münnerstadt an. Bereits 1960 hatte Frau Maria Spiegel die von ihrem verstorbenen Mann, dem Kirchenmaler Theodor Spiegel, gesammelten Hinterglasbilder dem Mainfränkischen Museum Würzburg als Stiftung übergeben.
