octavo, cloth. octavo, cloth. (157)pp. AMS Press, Reprint. Originally published in 1860. Hamilton, Assistant Keeper of Manuscripts of the British Museum, was the first scholar to come forward and declare the Perkins Folio a fraud. His letter in the July 2, 1859, issue of "The Times" was the start of the unravelling of Collier's forgery and long-disguised deception. This book fleshed out Hamilton's stand on the controversy. Very fine.

This book presents an in-depth investigation into the authenticity of emendations and manuscript notes found within a 1632 edition of Shakespeare's works. Amidst a backdrop of controversy and accusations of fraud, the author examines the annotations to determine their legitimacy and potential connection to the playwright himself. Through a rigorous analysis of handwriting, spelling, and historical context, the book aims to shed light on the complex and intriguing world of Shakespearean scholarship and the ongoing debate surrounding the authenticity of these annotations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

This book examines questionable alterations to the work of William Shakespeare as they appear in a corrected edition of the second Folio from 1632. The author, a palaeographer, meticulously inspected the volume and discovered anachronisms in the writing style and physical characteristics of its annotations, which suggested they were not made in the seventeenth century as had been claimed. The corrections were published in 1852 by John Payne Collier, with the claim they were made by an unknown old corrector soon after the Folio's initial publication. The author compares the published corrections to the physical evidence of the manuscript and concludes the alterations were a modern fabrication. An accompanying inquiry explores the questionable authenticity of other purportedly old documents Collier released around the same time. These revelations challenge prior assumptions about the texts of Shakespeare's plays and shed light on the history of literary forgery. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
