Coleman 237. Shaler, was born in Newport, Kentucky in 1841. He was the State Geologist, and taught at Harvard. Contains many interesting observations on life, manners, and customs of antebellum Kentucky, with notes on slavery and slave dealing. In one interesting snippet of information, he relates the circumstances of his meeting in 1856, with Abraham Lincoln, who had come to visit the boy's grandfather.

The contents are: I, The Stability of the Earth; II, Volcanoes; III, Caverns & Cavern Life; IV, Rivers & Valleys; V, The Instability of the Atmosphere; VI, Forests of North America; and, VI, The Origin & Nature of Soils. At the point of publication, Professor Shaler taught geology at Harvard University. Written a century ago, the volume gains value in comparative studies.

Designed for the use of the students, this book explains the way in which the North American continent came to its present physical state and how that state affects the life of the people. No pocket, appears little-read. Very good condition.

'In his 1884 article, 'The Negro Problem', published in the Atlantic Monthly [Nov. 1884, pp. 697-8], Shaler claimed that black people freed from slavery were 'like children lost in the wood, needing the old protection of the strong mastering hand,' that they became increasingly dominated by their 'animal nature' as they grew from children into adults, and American slavery had been 'infinitely the mildest and most decent system of slavery that ever existed' ' (Wikipedia).
