This book traces the development of forest policy and the history of forest exploitation in France from the early Middle Ages to the end of the ancien regime. The forests of France were vast and supplied timber for fuel, construction, and shipbuilding. The increasing use of wood for fuel, and later, for the production of iron and glass, began to deplete the stock of timber by the end of the 16th century. The author details the evolution of royal ordinances designed to prevent the destruction of the forests and to preserve wood for shipbuilding. Nonetheless, the continued growth of cities and industries put increasing pressure on the forests, leading to conflicts between local communities and the state, as well as illegal logging and encroachment on forest lands. The policies developed during this period laid the foundation for the modern forest management system in France. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
