Images of heavy skies and dark, turbulent waters summon memories of the toil and grit of the many thousands who have worked the river since Roman times of pirates roaming the waters, soldiers and ships sunk in battle and, more recently, migrants embarking on dangerous journeys across the North Sea. With small figurative elements, such as disused artillery forts, quarries and other abandoned structures and ruins, Kander's photographs evoke the grimness of the river's history, as well as a contemporary sense of desolation.

His latest photographic series, Bodies, consists of nudes painted white against a black backdrop, their faces tuned away from the viewer…. Accessories are minimal, as is the aesthetic; yet, at the same time, the arrangement makes the sitters mostly voluptuous bodies seem baroque. Despite the abundance of flesh on display, however, the images lack a superficial sense of the erotic; the white makeup and lack of eye contact function as barriers, and the massiveness of the limbs recalls the work of Hans Bellmer and Lucian Freud. Like Bellmer and Freud, Kander presents us with a simulacrum of sensuality, questioning our images of the human body as well as the concept of beauty itself.

In December and early January, just before Barack Obama`s administration took office, the photographer Nadav Kander shot 52 portraits of Barack Obama`s top advisers, aides and members of his incoming administration. From the secretary to the secretary of state, the result was a fascinating picture of a group of individuals on the brink of history. "I don`t believe all that shit about `capturing the soul. It [photography] is about accuracy of portrayal. It is about who these people are and who they want to be." (Nadav Kander) The photographs, originally published in the New York Times magazine, were made extremely quick all 52 were photographed over six days in December and early January for a maximum of 20 minutes. "It was done in quite an athletic manner. I thought it would be amazing to see the tiny gestures that make someone human, the way they cock their head, the way they put their hands in their pocket. It distils your look: you`re almost staring at people. It`s an administration that`s about equality, so [we thought] let`s have the same background for the secretary of state as for the secretary who answers the phone."
