Erste illustrierte Ausgabe der "Bibel des Bonapartismus", die den "Mythos Napoléon" bis heute in Frankreich prägt. Das zuerst 1823 veröffentlichte "Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène" basiert auf den nahezu täglichen Gesprächen Napoleons mit Las Cases. Sie sind keine Schilderung der Zeit des Exils, sondern geben Napoleons Reflexionen zu…seiner Person, seinen Handlungen und seinen politischen Maximen während seiner gesamten Herrschaft wieder. - Exemplar mit den schönen Holztichtafeln, die nicht allen Ausgaben beigegeben wurden. Die über 600 Textillustrationen gelten als "Charlets Hauptwerk für die Buchillustration" (Rümann, Das illustr. Buch, S. 152). Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet wird u.a. wegen seiner hervorragenden Uniformdarstellungen des napoleonischen Zeitalters geschätzt. - Gutes, an zwei Seiten unbeschnittenes Exemplar. Kurze Randeinrisse zu Beginn und Schluss der beiden Bände sind vor dem Binden sorgfältig und fachmännisch geschlossen worden, einige kleine Randausrisse wurden in gleicher Manier ergänzt. Vereinzelt etwas fleckig, S. 733-42 in Bd. 1 etwas stärker stockfleckig, Vorwort in Band 1 etwas fleckig. Es fehlt der Vortitel zu Band 1. Die vorderen- und hinteren Umschlaghälften der Originalumschläge sind bis an die Ränder der Illustration beschnitten und ganz auf Papier aufgezogen worden.
